LYSOSOMES
Lysosomes are membrane- bounded vesicles produced by the Golgi apparatus. They contain high concentrations of protein which makes them densely staining in electron micrographs and powerful hydrolytic digestive enzymes. Lysosomes are actively engaged in digesting all sorts of molecules (even portions of the cell itself). White blood cells defend the body by engulfing bacteria that are than enclosed within vesicles. When lysosomes fuse with these vesicles, the bacteria are digested. They also participate in apoptosis, or programmed cell death, which is a normal part of cell development.
